PocketBible: dictionaries beside your reference books

Use PocketBible to organise biblical texts, dictionaries and commentary around the passage under study.

A passage can prompt several questions at once. A name may need explaining, an expression may deserve a closer look, and a commentator may notice a connection that the first reading missed. Different reference books address different parts of that work.

PocketBible offers a way to gather those books on a phone. The useful starting point is a small collection whose purpose is clear: a biblical text for reading, a dictionary for consultation and commentary for another perspective.

This guide focuses on the library tools described in its store listings. Included books and optional additions need to be distinguished before building a collection.

    What does PocketBible bring together?

PocketBible Bible Study App is published by Laridian, Inc. Both listings describe Bible reading alongside reference works, with downloaded material stored on the device. Registration opens access to an included collection; additional titles can be purchased separately.

The Android description names Easton’s Bible Dictionary and Hitchcock’s Dictionary of Bible Names, plus reference works such as Nave’s Topical Bible. It also lists Matthew Henry’s concise commentary. These are distinct books with their own approaches, rather than a single answer system.

    Tools within the library

According to the store descriptions, the following tools support consultation. Some display controls and advanced options differ between the two platforms.

    • Reference reading: consult dictionaries and commentaries held within the app’s collection.
    • Word and phrase searches: locate matching material in Bibles and other library books.
    • Split viewing: keep biblical text and another book visible together; Android describes two phone panes and five tablet panes.
    • Linked positions: the Android app can keep open books aligned with a verse, with an option to disable this behaviour.
    • Study records: make annotations, apply highlights and keep bookmarks for later consultation.
    • Offline books: read resources after their downloads have completed on the device.
    • Reading progress: track devotional or plan reading and synchronise records through Laridian Cloud.

    Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the book, chapter and verse selector to reach a passage. Then choose one reference book to consult alongside it. Working with a single companion resource at first makes it easier to notice what each view contributes.

Adjust the reading appearance with the settings available on the device. The listings describe font and size choices, and the iOS description includes built-in help. Consult that help when a pane or library control needs explanation.

Keep the library modest while learning these controls. Open a dictionary entry, return to the passage and check that the connection between them is clear. If a resource does not address the question, set it aside for another session rather than collecting explanations that serve different purposes.

A library routine for one passage

    1. Choose a short passage and identify one question worth investigating.
    2. Consult an included dictionary that addresses the name or subject.
    3. Search a relevant word or phrase to locate related material.
    4. Read a commentary’s explanation, keeping the biblical context visible.
    5. Save a brief note identifying the resource and what remains uncertain.

A concordance-style question asks where a word appears. PocketBible’s stated word and phrase search is a practical starting point for that question; this guide does not assume that every installed book includes a separate concordance.

    When this collection may help

The arrangement can help with personal study or preparation for a discussion, particularly when several references need to remain close to a passage. Keep an author’s interpretation distinct from the biblical text and record disagreements as questions to explore.

Install PocketBible and review the options

Look for Laridian, Inc. at the store destination. Although the Google Play listing shows no adverts or in-app purchases, additional books are sold separately. The iOS description also lists an optional advanced-feature subscription. Review those distinctions before choosing extras.

Confirm which books belong to the included collection and which require a separate purchase. A library can remain useful without adding every available title.

Keep the passage at the centre

A portable reference collection can support patient reading. Choose resources for their relevance, keep track of the source being consulted and return regularly to the passage that prompted the question.
