Bring dictionaries, commentaries and parallel reading into a reference library that travels with your phone.
A dictionary answers one kind of question; a commentary offers another perspective; a second translation reveals a different wording. Bringing these resources together can make a phone useful as a small reference library, with each book serving a particular purpose.
The aim is to choose a manageable collection. Begin with a Bible, add a dictionary, then consider whether commentary or comparison tools would help with the questions arising from that reading. A larger catalogue is useful only when its contents suit the task. Let each question lead to an appropriate source, then return to the passage and assess the explanation instead of accepting it automatically.
These four options approach the library idea differently. PocketBible gathers books, Parallel Plus prioritises parallel versions, Bible Gateway places additional references in its Plus subscription, and Bible Lexicon combines lexical searches with concordance tools. Their features should be assessed separately.
The overview below follows the apps’ store descriptions. Included material, optional purchases and layouts deserve attention before installation, especially when comparing a phone with a tablet.

Four approaches to a portable study library
1. PocketBible Bible Study App
PocketBible, published by Laridian, Inc., connects Bible reading with a collection of reference books. Its listings name Easton’s Bible Dictionary, Hitchcock’s Dictionary of Bible Names and Matthew Henry’s concise commentary among the resources available after registration.
Downloaded books remain usable offline. Split views can keep a passage beside another resource, while word or phrase searches help locate material. Additional titles are sold separately; the iOS description also offers an advanced-feature subscription.
Advantages:
- Dictionary and commentary titles within the same reading app.
- Downloaded Bibles and books available without a network connection.
- Searches across reference material, plus personal annotations.
- Reading progress and annotations can synchronise through Laridian Cloud.
2. Parallel Plus® Bible-study app
Parallel Plus, from The Bible Works, makes comparison the centre of its design. Versions appear in aligned columns, so differences can be considered within the surrounding passage. Column arrangements depend on the device and screen orientation.
Its library approach centres on translations and language helps. The App Store description explicitly says that commentary is excluded, a useful distinction when deciding which kind of reference collection to build.
Advantages:
- Parallel columns for comparing how versions express a passage.
- Greek and Hebrew word studies, with lexical entries on iOS.
- Offline operation described in the Google Play listing.
- The Google Play listing has neither an advertising label nor a purchase label.
3. Bible Gateway
Bible Gateway combines multiple Bible translations with audio, searches and reading plans. An account supports notes, highlighting and synchronisation. Its tablet layout can display two versions together, making it another option for comparing wording.
The deeper reference collection belongs to the paid Bible Gateway Plus option. This includes dictionaries, commentaries and study Bibles. Google Play lists adverts and purchases, so distinguish the basic reader from the subscription library.
Advantages:
- Find passages using a keyword, reference or topic.
- Compare a pair of translations on a tablet.
- Plus brings verse-linked dictionaries and commentary insights.
- Account-based annotations can follow reading across devices.
4. Bible Lexicon: Bible Study
Bible Lexicon, by Michal Schejbal, brings a concordance, lexical searches and parallel biblical texts into an offline study tool. This guide links to the Android version through Google Play.
It can complement a book-based library when the question concerns occurrences of a term. Search options include transliteration and Strong’s numbers, while a vocabulary creator organises material from a selected passage.
Advantages:
- Concordance searches alongside lexicon consultation.
- Parallel biblical texts and selectable words for further study.
- Vocabulary creation, exports, notes and bookmarks.
- Free, with advertising and purchases absent from the Google Play listing.
Choose books by the question they answer
Check the publisher, included resources and optional charges in the relevant store. Start with a modest collection and practise moving between text and reference before expanding it.
The buttons above open the PocketBible guide and separate pages about music, offline reading and dating with care. Each page explains its own app and provides the appropriate store destinations.
